Actual position and research subject

My work contributes to the understanding of the acetate metabolism in E. coli for basic and applied research. In particular, the research project ACEMOD aims to explain how acetyl-phosphate, an intermediate of the acetate pathway that can modify proteins by acetylation or phosphorylation, regulates bacterial metabolism through protein acetylation. The knowledge of the E. coli metabolic acetate pathway and its regulation are fundamental to design industrially useful strains as cell factories for innovative biotechnological applications. One example is the COBIOMACE project which goal is to produce biomolecules from CO2 via acetate using a two-stage microbial system. In the first stage, the CO2 is converted to acetate by anaerobic microbial consortia and this acetate is used in the second stage as carbon source by metabolically engineered E. coli to produce various biomolecules. By coupling these two stages, we aim to develop a sustainable biotechnological process using microorganisms as cell factory for upgrading renewable carbon resources into bioproducts.
